About Yog Ganga Studio for Yoga Studies

Swati and Rajiv Chanchani established the Yog-Ganga Centre for Yoga Studies in June 1988, guided by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. The centre has five primary objectives:

1. To foster the study of yoga philosophy and practice in accordance with the esteemed sage Patanjali, as interpreted by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta S. Iyengar, and Prashant S. Iyengar.

2. To explore yoga within the broader context of Indian culture, particularly through art, architecture, dance, language, literature, and music.

3. To position yoga as a discipline that aligns with nature, promoting actions that contribute to the preservation of the earth’s environment.

4. To enhance public health and community well-being through the study of yoga and Ayurveda.

5. To establish a space for like-minded individuals to convene and discuss the advancement of these objectives.

Initially, the Yog-Ganga Centre was located in Mussoorie, situated in the lower Himalayas. In 2002, the centre relocated to a serene, forested area in nearby Dehradun.

The centre features a specially designed building constructed from brick and locally sourced limestone. This facility includes a 1500 sq.ft. well-equipped yoga hall, a library, a space for lectures and demonstrations, a reception area, and additional rooms. An intimate amphitheater, beautifully landscaped gardens on terraced slopes filled with fruit trees, shrubs, medicinal plants, and flowers create an ideal environment for reflection, study, and the practice of Yoga. The gardens are frequented by eighty species of birds, monkeys, deer, pine martens, mongooses, and various other wildlife.

Classes at Yog-Ganga offer an innovative combination of interdisciplinary training. Asanas, pranayama, classical Indian philosophy, cultural studies, environmental studies, and health and healing sciences are seamlessly integrated. Regular general classes for local students, as well as short and long courses for students from outside the area, are conducted.

The centre’s directors and visiting scholars frequently deliver talks and presentations. Significant dates on the calendar are celebrated with special events.
